The head dress is preemptive to an engagement ritual (prior to marriage). This piece also depicts a tradition of ear plugs still practiced today by the Omo tribes. The native traditions and way of life of the Omo tribes is under threat by the constructions of nearby dams that are affecting the supply of water to the Omo river. The knock on effects of the dams is seriously compromising the future of the Omo tribes that have existed there for thousands of years.
